This one of the kind oak armoire was built in 1837. All hand pegged, combining structure and show casing the regional entity from Calvados(Normandy)designs, were inspired from Parisians ornaments, trend at the time.
Prussian imported oak (soft texture, easy to work with)imported in 1814,was used to fabricate the fine sculptures of the piece, and the body was made from oak "Merrian" noted for its sublime decorative marble effect and sturdiness. The many regional motifs, including the flower basket(below the crown),bundles of wheat, lyre, doves and roses sculpted on each front of the meddallion, signify the opulent status of the noble owners of the epoch.
Original hand-forged hardware in the shape of a rooster head, adorn the piece and includes the original lock and key.The center shelf holds two drawers and a secret one hidden in between. You can also notice the D.V innitial and further down the date 1837.This magnificent piece of collection is an extraordinary example of the rich blend of French art, culture, and superb artistry. |
